This is the best chart to explain the issues. I’ve been using it with attribution every chance I get with students and professional audiences. Time for a repost! The empty quadrant is an energy desert.
There are actually two empty quadrants. You note "High-energy, low-income countries don't exist." The converse is also true: Low-energy, high-income countries also do not appear in that plot.
If you are really concerned about worldwide poverty and want to make it better, we need to get behind recycling of slightly used nuclear fuel. It would provide unlimited electricity for them all at about a penny per kWh. Nothing would help them more. Sending them money to live in poverty is not working since their "leaders" take most of it and keep it. Let the free enterprise system work and we would make a big dent in poverty. It is government policy that makes poverty, not the free exchange among people. Want your 30X electricity? Recycling SUNF in fast reactors releases 30X the original electricity produced by the fuel. It is really a no-brainer.
While I agree we use more energy in North America (canada for me) it’s disingenuous to compare us with equatorial countries that rarely get below 15c at night.
I need at least 30x more energy than someone from sierra leonie just to remain alive, everything else comes after this. That is also why it’s not zero sum for us to bring such people as immigrants.
Our useless federal liberals proclaim we’ll get to net zero by 2050 but they also have open borders and suggest we need to go from 40 to 100 million people thru immigration by 2100.

Thanks! Taking your lead, I've produced a graph of animal-source food supply vs. income:
X-axis: GDP per capita, USD
Y-axis: kg/person/year of animal-source foods
Bubble size: population
Color: World Bank income group
Axes: log-log
High-income, low-ASF-consumption countries are rare, too. The form of food energy matters.

Ludicrous to think we can do both.
